Placed on a par with Leonardo da Vinci by Vasari, Correggio has been highly regarded ever since, and frequently copied. His Louvre painting of St Catherine (c.1526-7) was the basis for both Picart’s engraving and the oil copy made by George Coates after he won the NGV Travelling Scholarship in 1896.

In 2011, the NGV acquired Correggio’s early Madonna and Child (panel, c.1514-15).
