Cruikshank, George (1792-1878; English)
29 etchings
Presented by B.Moore, 1899
National Gallery of Victoria (acc.nos.4203.1-3 to 4203.29-3)

[reproduction: Monstrosities of 1822 (NGV 4203.3-3)]

These etchings provide a good sample of Cruikshank’s caricatures of the foibles of contemporary politics and fashion, in the tradition of Gillray, Rowlandson, and his father Isaac (1746-1811).

While not listed in the NGV’s Annual Report for 1899 or the general catalogue issued in 1905, these prints are clearly identified by the gallery as donated in 1899. They range in date of composition from 1814 to 1835, most of them collected in Cruikshankiana (Thomas McLean, London, 1835). Some of these etchings also appear to have been worked on by George Cruikshank’s brother Isaac Robert, with whom he collaborated in the series Pierce Egan’s Life in London (1821).

As noted below, three of the prints donated in 1899 have yet to be identified, and may no longer be in the collection.
