Dawe’s skill as portraitist brought him to the attention of Tsar Alexander I, who invited him to Russia to portray the military heroes of the victory over Napoleon for the Winter Palace in St Petersburg. Between 1822 and 1828, he completed over 300 of these, now housed in the Hermitage.
