Gebler, Friedrich Otto (1838-1917; German)
Study of a wild boar
Oil on paper, 15.6 x 24.5 cm
Purchased, 1891
National Gallery of Victoria (p.392.122-1)

This work was acquired as the work of Clara Folingsby: see Folingsby (C.) Oil studies {1891} NGV/Loc? [PA]. However, it was later recognized as by Gebler, a specialist in animal painting. The Lenbachhaus in Munich holds a number of his sketches and paintings, bequeathed by the artist.

See AR 1891, p.24 (noting the purchase of 125 oil studies by Clara Folingsby)

The picture was already ascribed to Gebler in NGV 1943, cat.234. For the artist, see AKL 50 (2006), pp.485-46, mentioning the works in Munich; see also (citing Thieme-Becker etc.)
