Gill, S.T. (1818-80; English/Australian)
Bushrangers’ Camp [#1] 1871
Watercolour, pencil and ink on buff paper, 19.1 x 24.0 cm (oval)
Purchased, 1872
State Library of Victoria (H5264)

One of the Gill watercolours recorded as purchased by the joint trustees (NGV/Public Library) in 1872: see Gill Overlanders {1872} SLV [WT], etc. The present work and Gill Bushrangers’ Camp [#2] { 1872} SLV [WT] form a pair.

As Grishin notes (2015), Gill took a generally sympathetic view of bushrangers, emphasizing their straitened circumstances.
