The artist, noted in NGV 1894 as a member of the Royal Institute for Painters in Water-Colours (RI), specialized in marine views. He grew up in Dublin, moving to London in the 1850s.

This work, bought from the Anglo-Australian exhibition in Melbourne, was illustrated in NGV 1894 and 1905 (as shown here). A smaller version, on canvas, sold at auction in London in April 2014.
