The artist, elected an RA in 1838, was a successful landscapist, so much so that from 1872 he cruised the world in his private yacht, distributing his paintings to various collections, including Ben Lawers, which he presented to Melbourne in 1872 (refer entry for further details). He died in Capetown while on one of these trips.
