Montefiore, Eliezer Levi (1820-94; English/Australian), after Chevalier, Nicholas (1828-1902; Swiss/Australian)
Crossing a Creek, N.Z.
Engraving (?)
Presented by Montefiore, by 1894
Unidentified; present location unknown

This was no.2 in the set of 4 “etchings” by Montefiore listed in NGV 1894 as donated by the artist: see now Montefiore The Rip – Port Phillip Heads 1868 {by 1894} SLV [PR], the only one of the four apparently still in the collection.

Nicholas Draffin notes that Montefiore became a close friend of Chevalier and his wife in Melbourne during the 1850s, and may have been encouraged in his own artistic activities by the younger artist (for whom, see linked artist entry).
