Presented by John Pascoe Fawkner, 1868

Catalogued in the early NGV records as by an un-named artist, this was one of several views of early Melbourne donated in 1868 by Fawkner (for details, see linked entry on him).

The work itself no longer seems to be extant, but the State Library catalogue lists a photograph (reproduced here), describing the original sketch as attributed to O’Brien.

AR 1870-71, p.34, under drawings presented by Fawkner (“artist unknown”); NGV 1894, p.117 (V.Buvelot Gallery, 3rd bay, no.69; size given as 8 ½ x 11 inches); NGV 1905, p.126 (V.Buvelot Gallery, 3rd bay, no.4; giving a date of c.1837)

See SLV catalogue entry for the photo shown here (acc.no.H3847)
