Hunter arrived in Sydney with the First Fleet in 1788, and later succeeded Arthur Phillip as the second governor of New South Wales (1795-1800).

During his years in Australia, he made numerous drawings: see e.g. his sketchbook Birds & Flowers of New South Wales Drawn on the Spot in 1788, ’89 & ’90, held in the National Library, Canberra.
