Dicksee The Crisis 1891 {1891} NGV [PA]
* Dicksee Unidentified drawing {c.1896?} Loc? [DR]

Dicksee, who became a member of the Royal Academy in 1891, pursued a successful career as a painter of historical subjects and dressy society portraits. Late in life, he was elected President of the RA (1924) and knighted (1925).

For the artist, see Gott 19C (2003), p.107 (entry on The Crisis); Bénézit 4, p.882; and AKL 27 (2000), pp.182-83. See also; however, the reference there to an 1885 painting by Dicksee (Chivalry) as held in the Art Gallery of New South Wales appears to be incorrect; that work, in private hands (last auctioned by Christie’s, London, Dec.2012), was included in the “Victorian Visions” exhibition at the AGNSW in 2010: for these details, and a reproduction, see
