The son of French Huguenot refugees, Fourdrinier was born in Groningen, studied with Bernard Picart in Amsterdam, and then emigrated to England in 1720, where he established a career as an engraver of portraits and book illustrations.

The older view that there was another engraver named Pierre Fourdrinier has recently been dismissed as a mistake.
