Guardabassi The Venetian Senator {1883} NGV [WT]

The artist worked in Rome and Paris, mainly producing picturesque landscapes and figure studies, five of which were acquired for the Melbourne collection in 1883 (as detailed above).

Only The Venetian Senator remains in the NGV; Una Vecchia che fila was transferred to Queenscliff in 1941, and the others were apparently auctioned off in 1950: see individual entries for details. Several of the de-accessioned works have appeared at auction in Melbourne again more recently, e.g. Un Vecchio Cappuccino.
