A major contributor to the development of le style Louis XIV, Le Brun trained with Poussin in Rome (1642-46) and then worked initially under Fouquet and then Colbert. He prospered particularly in the opening decades of the reign of Louis XIV, who admired him unreservedly; but after Colbert’s death in 1683 his fortunes dipped.

The engravings listed above, all from the Levey gift of 1879, reproduce several significant tapestries and murals produced by Le Brun for Louis XIV (for details, see individual entries)
