Le Clerc, born in Metz, was admitted to the French Academy in 1672 and was appointed Graveur du roi in about 1688. He coordinated the series of engravings of Louis XIV’s triumphs issued during the 1670s (Levey gift, cat.134ff.) and personally completed some 17 of them.

The other two prints listed above, also from Levey’s 1879 gift to the NGV, are evocative images of the remarkable cultural achievements of the opening decades of Louis XIV’s reign.
