The artist, the older brother of Waller Hugh Paton, turned down an invitation to become a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In 1865, he was appointed to the position of the Queen’s Limner for Scotland. A specialist in historical compositions, he was also noted for his images of Celtic legends and fairy pictures. He was generally known as Noel.
