The SLV describes this bust, reproduced in the 1905 NGV catalogue, as “presented to the Trustees of the Melbourne Public Library, transferred to the National Gallery, 1871.”

The work is inscribed in capitals on the reverse of the figure: “C.Summers / Sculptor / Melbourne / 1864”. From the back, Fawkner’s trademark cap is also clearly visible; compare Kemp John Pascoe Fawkner 1877 {1877} SLV [PA].
