Mais, a professional engineer, migrated from England in 1850, and subsequently held a number of senior railways and engineering positions in various parts of Australia.
The photographs he donated to Melbourne collection were all collected during a grand tour he undertook in Sri Lanka, Egypt, Italy and France in 1882-83, following the death of his wife.
